Birthday Invitation Wording Tips

When it comes to birthday invitations, the design and the wording should always work together to create the final effect. Finding the perfect wording for invitations is as much of an art as designing the invitation itself. Font options and font colors play an important role, but selecting the right wording can leave a lasting impression. You can easily designate your party as fun and carefree, elegant, wacky, themed, or a surprise by making changes to your wording alone! Think about what type of birthday party you would like to have, then start on your wording keeping that in mind.

Here are some tips for getting started:

  • Essential Parts:
    • Greeting
    • Event
    • Honoree
    • Date
    • Time
    • Location
    • Hosts
    • RSVP information
    • Registry information and other important details
  • Theme: If your party has a theme, it can be fun to incorporate that into your greeting or RSVP! Short poems, puns, and other play-on-words are a great way to put a little of the excitement of your party into the invitation.
  • Poems: Short poems are perfect to incorporate into your greeting. Try to avoid lengthy poems, as your invitation will look crammed. Resist the temptation to turn your entire invitation into one long poem, as your guests will have a hard time picking out important information such as your date and time.
  • Length: Not all invitations are the same size, so take a good look at the available printing space of your invitation to start. If there is limited space, it is best to trim your wording to a bare minimum. If you have a lot of room to play, then get creative and take advantage of it!
  • Surprise: No matter the theme, if your party is a surprise you will want to say so on the invitation. Add a simple "Shh... It's a Surprise!" to your invitation wording. Try putting it at the very top, the very bottom, or incorporate it after the greeting or RSVP wording. Depending on the style of your invitation, see if you have room to separate it from the rest of your text so that it stands out!
