Mardi Gras Traditions

Mardi Gras, like every holiday, has picked up traditions over the years depending on where it is celebrated. In the US, you likely think of Carnaval, masquerades, and plastic beads. If you lived in the UK, chances are you would think of pancakes and frying pan races. Every setting will inspire different traditions to be carried on over the years. When planning a Mardi Gras party, it is a good idea to keep some of these traditions in mind as activities, decorations, and entertainment for your guests to enjoy.

The largest and most well know tradition of Mardi Gras is the revelry similar to Carnaval, involving acrobatics, acting skits, and glamorous costumes. Millions of people love to watch Mardi Gras shows performed by various krewes across the nation. Performers costumes have inspired Mardi Gras attire with sequins, feathers, jewels, crowns, beads, and extremely bright colors. Also popular are elaborate masquerade masks with all variety of shapes, some even representing a variety of animals.

Along the lines of Carnaval-type festivities is the crowning of a Mardi Gras king and queen. Sometimes, this tradition is accomplished by king cake, a bread-like pastry shaped into a large ring. A bean is baked into the cake at a random place, and the person who eats it is crowned for the night.

Food and music is a part of almost any celebration. Traditional Mardi Gras food includes very rich desserts and pastries, spicy Cajun dishes including crawfish, or Creole style cooking. The more the better, and plenty of alcohol accompanies it to keep the party going. Particularly in New Orleans style festivals, people play upbeat and lively jazz.

Mardi Gras Party Ideas

The best way to celebrate Mardi Gras is to incorporate as many traditional festivities and revelries into your party celebrations as possible. Small things, like offering all of your guests party beads or masks is a great start. Also, crowning a king or queen of Mardi Gras can be a fun activity. You can choose any variety of methods for crowning, including random draw, king cake, best dressed competition, etc. Alternatively, you can crown yourself as royalty for the evening and welcome your guests as gracious subjects. Play acting on Mardi Gras is part of the fun!

Serving a buffet style selection of rich and delicious foods is a great way to keep the atmosphere fun. There is no formality of a seated meal, and guests are free to indulge as they see fit. Be sure to have mixed drinks available as well! Garnish your drinks with themed stirrers or glass gems to mark your own glass.

Hiring a small group of revelers to provide entertainment is an excellent way to spread excitement at your party. This is particularly fun in a larger celebration that takes place at a venue, as opposed to a more intimate celebration in your own home. Dazzled guests makes for the best celebration, so be sure to take everything to the next level on this day. It is all about luxury and indulgence, after all!

Decoration Ideas

Decorations for Mardi Gras should all remind your guests of fun and luxury. Gems, beads, pearls, crowns, and the like can be used as decorative additions or arranged into a centerpiece. Feathers, streamers, and confetti make great additions as well. Sprinkle confetti on your tables and use feather boas as filler wherever possible. Be sure to include some large feathers in key places.

Mardi Gras is all about more. The reason it is called Fat Tuesday is because it is the last day to indulge before the period of fasting associated with Lent. Even if you do not practice this particular religious tradition, Mardi Gras is still an excellent day to let loose and enjoy everything. Rich fabrics, capes, masks, and sparkles are perfect for the occasion. The more the better!
