Getting Ready for Santa

Many people are enamored with the magic of Christmas Day. Twinkle lights and a warm fuzzy glow surrounding family and loved ones, with little kids' laughter and smiles all around--it is certainly a day to relish. However, its partner Christmas Eve is often overlooked save for in the brilliant poem “The Night Before Christmas.” The magic captured by these few lines popularized by countless illustrated children’s books is worth heightening in your family, to your children’s delight.

A classic idea that every child should enjoy is helping to set out milk and cookies for Santa. He works up a huge appetite on his rounds, and needs a little help to keep up his energy! You can color a note for Santa as well, for a personal touch to the generic midnight snack. Don't forget a treat for the reindeer as well!

Another practical activity that your children may find themselves enjoying is tidying up for Santa. Simple chores like dusting the mantle and area surrounding the fireplace, as well as picking up scattered toys in children’s rooms are the sort of things Santa appreciates most. It is hard to work in a dirty environment, even if you are a magical guy like Santa Claus! Put your kids to work in honor of the big man in the red suit. You might be surprised with how quickly things can get done with the right bit of motivation.

Christmas Sweater Style

The idea of the Christmas sweater became popularized out of sheer necessity, to keep warm on a very chilly day! However, somewhere along the line (I think we can all agree) this necessity got twisted and warped into a Nightmare-Before-Christmas-style horror. Sweaters made by grandma have somehow taken on an insultingly fashion-less and hideous style rightfully deserving some good humored mockery. And mock them, many people have!

A growing party trend is showing off the ugly with pride at an Ugly Christmas Sweater party for family and friends. A special prize goes to the attendee adorning the most shocking design. If you’re not one to intentionally want to look like a Christmas clown, shop instead for a fashionable Christmas sweater keeping in mind a few bits of advice.

A Christmas sweater meant to impress should never be decorated with any Christmas designs. Say no to Rudolf or jingling bells—even holly would be a mistake. A wintery pattern is acceptable only if it is subtle and one you would wear on any other day. Pick a Christmas or winter color (red, green, silver, gold, white, cream, etc.) for your sweater to express your festivities if you like. This color should be based on your personal tastes and one that matches well with your coloring and features. Then, try on a few options with cute and stylish cuts to see how they fit your body. Don’t be afraid to accessorize with a scarf, gloves, or even a knit cap.
