Finding Time during the Holiday Season

clock October 16, 2009 10:09 by author meghan

It’s the 21st century, and family is anything but simple!  Keeping track of where you were for which holiday, which year, and trying to split your time equally is unreasonable, not to mention impossible.  On top of it all, you have to try to divide your time between your incredibly complex family and your spouse’s!  Everyone says that the holiday season is supposed to be about family, friends, and the spirit of giving, but what often ends up happening is giving too much of yourself to try to please everybody.  Stress has a scientifically proven, huge impact on your immune system, and letting yourself get pulled in every direction will only leave you with a headache and a cold for the holiday season.

So, it’s time to get back to the basics.  Light yourself a pumpkin or cinnamon spice candle, sit down in your favorite comfy chair, and give yourself a moment.  Start by asking yourself what it is that you want to do this year.  Whether that means going to your mom’s for a home cooked meal, celebrating with your best friend, or shutting yourself up in your room with a “Bah Humbug!” sign on your door, the important thing is to start by figuring it out for yourself.  Next step, talk with your spouse or significant other, and decide what would make you happy as a couple.  Even if it means changing a long running tradition, or doing the exact same thing as last year.   Give yourself the gift of a holiday with less stress.

Don’t forget to take time to enjoy the changing seasons, the brilliant colors, the cold air, and the taste of a homemade pumpkin pie.  Read an inspiring novel or one of your favorite classics.  And finally, start planning early so you don’t feel that last minute crunch.  Here are some great decoration and gift ideas to give you a head start:

Are you ready for another Holiday Season?  Picking out the right card for your family, friends, and co-workers can be a hassle that adds nothing but stress to your already overgrown list of things to do.  This year, I will be sending out Thanksgiving cards instead of the traditional Christmas cards!  It’s a great way to stand out from the crowd, celebrate in a fresh and still festive way, or even avoid religious conflicts in a more professional environment.  After all, everyone, regardless of our unique backgrounds, practices, and beliefs, should spend a moment reflecting on the positive things to be thankful for in life.  Wishing others a Happy Thanksgiving is a perfect fit for both the formal business setting and the intimate setting of family and close friends.  Show your gratitude for the people in your life in a way that is sure to touch their hearts.  Here are a few of my personal favorites to get your creative leaves falling...

Merry Christmas!

The holiday season is just flying by, and I am sure I won't have time to post again between now and Christmas, so I thought I would wish all of my readers a very Merry Christmas.  This holiday season is so incredibly different than any that I have experienced so far.  For me it has almost been like a scene out of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas".  I keep running into friends and family who have been so dramatically affected by the downturn of the economy (who hasn't?).  However they are reacting SO differently then I would have ever anticipated.  Just like the Grinch who is surprised that the "Who's" are NOT devastated by losing all of their presents, I have been so surprised at how my friends and family have realized the true meaning of this season (and life for that matter).  We all seem to have finally realized that all the "stuff" in our lives really isn't as important as it once seemed.  I can't tell you how many people that I have spoken to who have shared stories of losing their jobs, losing their investments, losing their houses, but gaining perspective.  Maybe it is just a way of coping with this difficult time, but I for one certainly hope that this lesson that life seems to be teaching all of us right now stays in our heads and our hearts.  Life is more than having a 4,000 sqft house with plasma televisions in every room, a Mercedes in the garage, and a Starbucks cup in our hand.  It is about having a set of friends and family that are willing to help you out during tough times, who are willing to spend the evening on the front porch watching the kids ride bicycles in the yard rather than getting a babysitter and going out for a night on the town.

I certainly do hope the economy recovers soon, and I hope that the people devastated by this economic crisis can begin to rebuild their life soon.  However, more importantly, I hope that we all learn from this time of hardship and reconsider what is most important in our lives.  Kiss your kids more often, kiss your spouse more often, and enjoy what life has given you:)
