Send Out Quality Holiday Cards on the Cheap!

clock November 2, 2009 11:28 by author meghan

Yes, it’s that time of year again! Every winter I have the same internal debate with myself, about what a headache it can be to pick out cards, make lists of friends and family members, find updated addresses, and go through the general hassle of sending out holiday cards. Especially on a tight budget, I have to push myself to remember why we even send out cards anymore.  In a world where the internet and cell phones can put you in contact with just the click of a mouse or the push of a button, why bother with traditional mail? But, just close your eyes and think for a moment of how you feel when you receive a card for a holiday, your birthday or anniversary. The feel of the smooth or textured paper in your hands, the glitter, the gems… The extra time and effort you know went in to choosing a card, personalizing it, and sending it to you creates a feeling that is irreplaceable. Now that my head is back on straight and my heart is in the right place again, that doesn’t mean my wallet has gotten any wider!  So here are a few tips to save some green and send out high quality holiday cards out for cheaper!

Almost every website has it, but not everyone knows to look for it: the SALE section. Browse through what kinds of products are available at a discounted price. You might find the perfect card there and be done! Try checking prices on the simpler designs, without all the bells and whistles. Often times, they are much less expensive for the plainer result. To spruce up these designs, hit up your local crafts store and find a few inexpensive additions. You can easily add sequins, gems, or bows with a little bit of glue, or get some glitter pens in different holiday colors and add your own swirls and designs.  It takes just a few extra minutes, and costs a lot less! Another idea is to try DIY photos instead of using a professional photographer for your family portraits. Most digital cameras have a time-delay setting and a “portrait” or “photographing people” setting as well.  Try using that and a tripod or level surface to rest your camera on, and take your own family photograph in your home.  You can print your photos at a local pharmacy or grocery store that processes digital photos (and most do nowadays) for much less than ordering prints through a professional studio.

Fall/Christmas Wedding Ideas

Congratulations!  You’ve decided to tie the knot!  Now take a deep breath, because after the initial excitement of the engagement has passed, the overwhelming realization of the amount of work you have to take on is going to hit. Getting married is stressful, no matter when you set your date.  My advice is to start with the big things: find your wedding location(s) and caterer.  After that, worry about the photographer/videographer, florist, and DJ/band. The most time-consuming part is going to be figuring out how you want to personalize your wedding ceremony and reception, so that it captures a bit of the blending of you and your fiancé(e)’s personalities.  Start ahead on your wedding attire, and don't let yourself get worked up!  When it comes to everything else, think first about your colors, theme, and personal style. A lot of people really love to reflect the season in their big day.  There are a ton of little things you can do to add a bit of seasonal or holiday flair to your wedding, without making it seem cheesy or themed.

A new, hot trend is the black & white wedding with red accents.  Aside from bringing in the red with flowers, consider adding small touches of winter decorations like peppermints.  The bold red, white and black will keep your event classic and elegant. Coordinate your invitations with a design like this one:

Moulin Rouge Pocket,Insert Card & Pre-Tied Ribbon - ELEGANT Linen card White Linen w/ Red Cut Pocket and White Bow w/ red scroll top. Paper is a high quality linen 80 # card stock. Price includes coordinating envelope. You can purchase these blank or we can print them for you. LCP16-op - "Moulin Rouge Pocket,Insert Card & Pre-Tied Ribbon"

Another idea is to incorporate holly into your floral decorations.  It is a subtle touch that brings the warmth and brilliance of the red berries and deep green leaves without overdoing it.  Try using a simple invitation with a matching, but not overbearing theme:

Happy Scroll - This invitation is part of the fabulous Mindy Weiss Christmas collection! A trendy design printed only on premium fine quality 80 lb. card stock. Available either blank or personalized. Includes white envelope.ZMW1-53 - "Happy Scroll"

A great way to bring in the Fall season is to focus on the colors.  Bring in one of the warm golds, bronzes, oranges, or reds you find in Autumn leaves without making your whole event centered around fall colors. Pine cones are a great touch for floral arrangements, too.  Match your invitations in a subtle way as well:

Green and White Elegence Tall Pocket - Elegant long invitation with sparkling pocket and satin ribbon creates a lasting memory. Beautifully paired with a sparkling crystal envelope to complete the ensemble. 4.5" x 11", 100# cover, Sparkle! Assembly is required. If you would like us to assemble your personalized order please make note in the comment section. ( $.50 per card for assembly)LFS-100 - "Green and White Elegence Tall Pocket"

Woodland - This invitation is part of the fabulous Mindy Weiss collection. A Great Fall Design, printed only on premium fine quality 80 lb. card stock. Available either blank or personalized. Includes Ivory envelope.ZMW1C-12 - "Woodland"

Merry Christmas!

The holiday season is just flying by, and I am sure I won't have time to post again between now and Christmas, so I thought I would wish all of my readers a very Merry Christmas.  This holiday season is so incredibly different than any that I have experienced so far.  For me it has almost been like a scene out of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas".  I keep running into friends and family who have been so dramatically affected by the downturn of the economy (who hasn't?).  However they are reacting SO differently then I would have ever anticipated.  Just like the Grinch who is surprised that the "Who's" are NOT devastated by losing all of their presents, I have been so surprised at how my friends and family have realized the true meaning of this season (and life for that matter).  We all seem to have finally realized that all the "stuff" in our lives really isn't as important as it once seemed.  I can't tell you how many people that I have spoken to who have shared stories of losing their jobs, losing their investments, losing their houses, but gaining perspective.  Maybe it is just a way of coping with this difficult time, but I for one certainly hope that this lesson that life seems to be teaching all of us right now stays in our heads and our hearts.  Life is more than having a 4,000 sqft house with plasma televisions in every room, a Mercedes in the garage, and a Starbucks cup in our hand.  It is about having a set of friends and family that are willing to help you out during tough times, who are willing to spend the evening on the front porch watching the kids ride bicycles in the yard rather than getting a babysitter and going out for a night on the town.

I certainly do hope the economy recovers soon, and I hope that the people devastated by this economic crisis can begin to rebuild their life soon.  However, more importantly, I hope that we all learn from this time of hardship and reconsider what is most important in our lives.  Kiss your kids more often, kiss your spouse more often, and enjoy what life has given you:)

A new attitude

clock November 30, 2008 19:20 by author Kim: ImpressInPrint.com

There is nothing like a few days of vacation to cleanse you mind, renew your spirit, and give you a new attitude.  I LOVE that feeling of "I can conquer the world" I get when I finally get to spend some quality time with my family, sleep in a bit, and de-stress.  Stress is like kryptonite, sapping my creative and physical energy.

Thanksgiving for my family was wonderful; dinner was great, the kids had fun, and we were able to relax all day.  I started working on my annual family holiday letter.  Like many families I like to take a moment to look back at the year, identify all the neat things my family and I did (like buying Impress In Print! ), and then put them into a letter for family and friends.  I usually find myself having to limit the highlights in order to keep it to one page.  I thought I would give you a few ideas of things that you might want to include in your letter, just in case you have a case of writer's block:

  • What grade did you kids start this year?  Did they start college?
  • What are they learning at school (how to read, multiplication, US constitution, etc.)
  • Sports acomplishments/Academic awards
  • Funny things your kids have done in the last month or so
  • Promotions at work
  • Volunteering activites
  • Changing Jobs
  • New hobbies
  • Travel plans for the holidays
  • Cool vacations you took this year (include a picture)
  • New pets
  • New home (try not to brag too much :) )

That is just a short list of ideas, obviously make your letter as personal as you feel comfortable.  You can also create two letters, one for close family and another for friends and associates.  Everyone jokes about these letters, but I know I read every single one I recieve.  It is a nice way to catch up on the lives of those we don't get to see very often.  I wouldn't recommend doing this over email, instead opt for sending it through standard mail (maybe even use some nice decorative paper -- that's my sales pitch).  Have some fun with it, stretch out your creative legs and do something different this year.

Check out some decorative paper options here:
